This space started as a bare, weed-covered patch of ground against a stucco wall - not much to look at. The homeowner wanted something that would pull the whole yard together and give it a real focal point. That's where we came in.
We started with excavation and underground plumbing work, cutting through the concrete footing along the wall to route the supply lines cleanly. That's the part nobody sees, but it's what makes the whole system run reliably for years. Getting that foundation right matters more than most people realize. Once the plumbing was set and the trench was backfilled, we brought in the custom stainless steel basin - a big, heavy piece that took four of us to move into position.
Setting the basin level and fitting it flush against the wall is where precision counts. We drilled through the stucco to mount the spout, ran the lines to a filtration unit tucked neatly behind the wall, and tested everything before the water feature was planted up. River rock went in first along the basin floor, followed by water lilies that now spread across the surface in overlapping pads of green.
What we ended up with is a long, rectangular stainless steel basin with a wall-mounted spout that pours a clean arc of water directly into the center. The lily pads dampen the splash and add natural texture. The cobblestone border along the basin edge ties the whole thing into the surrounding landscape planting - agaves, succulents, and low Mediterranean-style plants that work perfectly in Malibu's climate.
This kind of build is more involved than it looks on the surface. There's real plumbing, real structural work, and a lot of problem-solving that goes into making it look effortless once it's done. The result is a water feature that runs quietly, looks sharp, and holds up over time.
